looking around corners

February 24th 2024

Really enjoyed an trip east to the Hackney Museum to hear Sarah Ainslie and Chris Dorley-Brown discuss their work from the streets of Hackney over the last thirty years. I’m sorry I wasn’t familiar with Sarah’s Hackney Working Women project but it was a great reminder of the work of what I might call the GLC days of London when there was real opportunity for photography with a social purpose.

I was also not aware of the back story to The Corners by Chris Dorley-Brown which was the work that brought him to my attention. I was so taken by it that I featured it in a talk to my local photography group over lockdown!

He gave some great insight into his work that I’m glad I managed to note down, roughly

I admire people waiting for the right moment…I just wanted to make it happen a bit quicker

He also spoke about the evolution of his work

You're playing but you don’t realise your half way through your next book

He aslo spoke of something that resonated with me, that of the past, present and future in one picture. A fugue. A wonderful description I want to develop!
